Lake Lillian
Lake Lillian 1332
July 17, 2006
The trail is difficult to follow once you pass Twin lakes, rough and steep, with no trail markers. From twin lakes, it’s a pretty steep uphill towards Lillian. At the time, we weren’t really sure we even made to Lillian, because there were no trail markers past Twin Lakes, and we wondered if we had stumbled upon Lake Laura instead.
Bugs abound, while the lake itself was pretty, it is not easily accessible since there was still snow on the shores approaching the lake off the trail. We saw a hiker presumably coming down the rampart ridge trail to the opposite shore, and he seemed to have an easy time getting into the lake, so it may be better to hike around the west side of the lake to get to nicer picnic spots. We had our picnic on a rocky outcrop hugging the sheer cliff to the left.
The hike back uphill is brutal, hot, and buggy, but once you get back up past twin lakes to the shadier wooded ridge, great views of Mount Rainier make the downhill 2 miles especially enjoyable.
Beware also that while the hike is listed as 4.1 miles one way, our GPS calculations put it at 10.5 miles RT, and elevation gain all told (there and back) was almost 2600 feet.
